- Going into debt in order to shop
- Shopping to feel good; shopping or spending money as a result of being disappointed, angry, or scared
- Feeling powerless over spending
- Shopping increases – either in frequency or in dollar amounts spent
- Spending money or shopping causes a rush of euphoria
- Shopping/spending habits case emotional distress or chaos in one’s life
- Having arguments with family or others regarding shopping or spending habits
- Minimizing, concealing, or lying to others about what was purchased or how much money was spent
- Spending time juggling accounts and bills to accommodate spending habits
- Spending or shopping feels reckless or forbidden
- Feeling guilt, shame, embarrassment or confusion after shopping or spending money
- Using shopping to escape from problems in life
- Using shopping to change mood when feeling sad, angry, lonely, bored, etc.
- Buying items that are not needed or never used
